Canada’s forest products sector is responsible for 10% of the total tonnage transported through Canada’s railways.

At a time of rapidly shifting trade rules, economic fluctuations, and changing climate patterns, Canadian Forestry has spearheaded collaborations with emerging industries, governments and communities to renew and rejuvenate this sector —and our forests — to secure a more productive, economically successful, and environmentally responsible future. But in order to meet the industry’s full potential, creating the good, green jobs of tomorrow, and allowing Canadians to reap the benefits of a global marketplace, forestry depends on a competitive transportation system. As forestry looks to generate an additional $20 billion in economic activity through new markets and eco-friendly products, competitive transportation service will be necessary to ensure trade flows both east-west and north-south to power Canada along its path to a ‘net-zero’ carbon economy by 2050.

Reaching Global Markets with Sustainable Made-in-Canada Solutions.

Today’s economy is a global one. For Canadian businesses to be competitive on the world stage we rely on having access to an efficient reliable and resilient transportation system. Our industry ships more than 58M tonnes of freight on a yearly basis, accounting for 10% of all Canadian freight shipped by rail, 25% of shipped over-road, and 24% of all outbound port-traffic. But for Canadian forestry to unlock its full potential and take its place as global leader in eco-friendly products and innovation, our country needs to commit to building the most efficient and effective Canada-wide transportation infrastructure system, one that considers new trade deals to assess future transportation infrastructure needs for forest products and other natural resources.

The world relies on the forest sector to provide greener options for the products they need.

Whether it is everyday essentials like toilet and tissue paper, bioplastics that will reduce single-use waste in our landfills, or biofuels that will reduce our dependance on fossil fuels, Canada’s forest products industry is poised to not only play a transformative role in our country’s economy, but emerge as a global leader in innovative, sustainable products and solutions. Canada needs to ensure that it has the transportation supply chain necessary to get all these products to market at home and abroad, now and for the future.
