From the bustling urban centers of Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver to the heart of rural Canada, the forest products sector is an essential driver of environmental, social, and economic prosperity across the country – building sustainable communities, creating jobs, and fostering innovation all while delivering the responsibly-sourced products Canadians depend on.
Produced with the expertise of iTOTEM Analytics and in partnership with BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI), FPAC is proud to present Canada’s Forest Economy: An Analysis of the National Supply Chain and Community Investment Impact. The report highlights how 19 leading forest products companies in Canada are sustaining a network of 30,000 vendors spanning approximately 1,595 municipalities nationwide.
Canada’s forest products sector is internationally recognized as an environmental leader – committed to clean and sustainable solutions that protect our environment and provide Canadians with quality lumber and paper products that build toward a more sustainable future. The sector also plays an outsized and interconnected role across Canada’s national economy, spurring inclusive growth and forging strong partnerships while providing over 200,000 family-supporting jobs that help workers raise a family and build a future — often in northern and rural communities where limited job opportunities exist.
$14.9 billion in annual supply chain expenditures in 2022, supporting approximately 1,595 municipalities and Indigenous communities.
30,000 vendors (between 2020 and 2022), with many engaged by multiple forest companies, demonstrating an integrated national network.
Indigenous-affiliated vendors contributed nearly $500M in goods, materials and services in 2022 – a 35.8% increase from 2020.
$39.2 million in community investments (between 2020 and 2022), targeting health, education, public amenities, and Indigenous initiatives.
As we envision a more sustainable and prosperous Canada, the forest sector and its people are well-positioned to be one of the most collaborative, solutions-based economic partners.
By tapping into the power of Canada’s forests and our world-leading commitment to sustainable forest management, we can secure inclusive growth, strengthen rural and northern communities, and help create green, good-paying jobs to support families and accelerate Canada’s trajectory towards a lower-carbon economy.
