Over the past week, I had the chance to interview Brett Erickson and Yash Shah, the on-site automation and controls specialists at Tolko Industries’ High Level division. Brett Erickson, the electrical and controls project manager, and Yash Shah, the automation and controls engineer, provided valuable insights into their roles at the lumber mill.
Here are the answers that I received from my questions:
When and how did you end up working at the mill?
Brett: “My wife and I moved to High Level in 2017. I had worked for Tolko Industries as a co-op student while attending University. It so happened there was a vacant position at the mill in High Level for a Control Systems Specialist when I was graduating. I interviewed for the role and was hired. I graduated University, got hired, married my wife, and moved to High Level in less than a month (that was a busy time). “
Yash: “I studied a Bachelor of Engineering in India. After graduating, I moved to Canada for post-graduation. When I graduated, I realized I had only three years to stay in Canada. Working in a remote location like High Level, Alberta would help me get permanent residency faster. So, I decided to move to High Level from Ontario. After securing my permanent residency, I started preparing for my PEng license. During that time, I found out that Tolko is one of the most reputed companies in the town, with a primary focus on renewable energy resources. I saw an opportunity to use my engineering skills to help the mill while gaining hands-on experience to kickstart my engineering career. With this goal in mind, I applied and started working with Tolko High Level in July 2018.”
What do you find most enjoyable about living in High Level?
Brett: “There are a lot of benefits to living in a small town as opposed to an urban area. The community in High Level is very welcoming and friendly, and we’ve made a lot of close friends here. The lack of traffic and 5 minute commute to work is a huge bonus!”
Yash: “High Level has a small population and a very friendly community. I moved here on my own but never felt alone in this town. I'm more of an indoor person, but when I do go out, I enjoy volunteering at the Town of High Level and at Alberta Health Services at the hospital as a Recreational Therapy Assistant. The sense of community and the support from neighbors make living in High Level a truly enjoyable experience.”
What is your favorite part of working in the forestry industry?
Brett: “I like the fast-paced nature of the industry. There are unique opportunities for innovation and learning that sets things apart.”
Yash: “Working in the forestry industry offers a unique blend of challenges and rewards. One of my favorite aspects is contributing to sustainable practices and renewable energy. The forestry industry plays a crucial role in environmental conservation, and being part of that mission is highly fulfilling. Additionally, the constant evolution of technology within the industry keeps things exciting, as there's always something new to learn and implement.”
What aspects of working in automation and controls do you find most rewarding?
Brett: “Improving the process and making a positive impact on performance of the equipment is always worth the effort.”
Yash: “The most rewarding aspect of working in automation and controls is the ability to innovate and improve processes. Implementing automated systems not only enhances efficiency but also significantly improves safety and reliability. Seeing the tangible impact of my work on the mill's operations, from reducing downtime to optimizing production, is incredibly satisfying. Moreover, the opportunity to collaborate with a talented team of professionals and contribute to the industry's technological advancements is something I deeply value.”
What advice would you give to a student aspiring to enter the field of automation and controls?
Brett: “Be prepared and willing to devote your learning to multiple disciplines. Success requires the fundamental understanding of how equipment works mechanically, electrically, programmatically, and from an OT perspective.”
Yash: “For students aspiring to enter the field of automation and controls, my advice would be to stay curious and continuously learn. This field is rapidly evolving, so keeping up with the latest technologies and industry trends is crucial. Gaining hands-on experience through internships or co-op programs can provide invaluable insights and practical skills. Additionally, focus on developing a strong foundation in programming and control systems, as these skills are fundamental in automation. Lastly, never underestimate the importance of teamwork and communication, as collaborating with others is key to successful projects and innovations.”
Special thanks to Brett and Yash for their insightful answers!
