Millar Western Pulp
The Millar Western pulp mill in Whitecourt opened in 1988. The pulp produced here is transported to international papermakers where it is made into products such as cardboard and paper towels. The mill provides multiple stable careers for many people including engineers, millwrights, lab technicians and many more.
My Day to Day
Every day looks different at the mill which keeps my job entertaining and challenging. Twelve hour days go by fairly quickly when we have to adapt to different situations that arise to produce our product as efficiently as possible. I will also work in different areas of the mill depending on the day.
My main tasks as a student operator include testing pulp and handling chemicals, driving a forklift in the warehouse, keeping the mill tidy, and helping out the full time operators with their day to day tasks.
Why I Love Millar Western
Millar Western Pulp is environmentally conscious and takes important measures to ensure the environment and ecosystems stay in good condition. Some measures we take include:
- Running our effluent through digesters and using the methane gas to produce power
- Replanting the trees that are cut down
