One of the best activities to do in the summer in Whitecourt is to float down the McLeod river. This is a great way to spend a relaxing day while taking in the scenic beauty of Whitecourt. On good weather days my friends and I will head down to the start point and blow up our tubes. It can take anywhere from an hour to three hours to float from the main starting point to the end point depending how fast the river is flowing. Make sure to park one vehicle at the starting point and one vehicle at the end point!
Tubing take out is just before the bridge so make sure you don’t go past that landmark.
Pack a cooler for water and snacks, a paddle to steer you out of the currents, and some rope to tie your tubes together!
Another well known place to enjoy a hot summer day in Whitecourt is Festival Park. Previously called Rotary Park, this park provides a wide variety of activities for all ages. The park includes outdoor water slides, a water park, soccer fields, beach volleyball, and a pond for fishing.
The park even expanded this year adding a new food stand! I enjoy coming here with family during the afternoon to go down the waterslides or with friends to play beach volleyball. During my evening run I will often come down to the park and do a few laps around the pond.
Luckily, Whitecourt also has an indoor recreation center with a pool to attend on colder or rainy days. I actually work there part time during the summer months as well as a lifeguard! I have been working at the Allan and Jean Millar Centre since I was 16 years old and I believe it is truly a wonderful facility. As you can tell by the name, this facility is sponsored by the Millars (like Millar Western). The facility includes a gym, a massive field house, childcare, a pool, and a children's play park. A membership gives you free access to all of these services and discounts on fitness classes. If you are looking for something to do on a rainy day this facility is definitely the answer!
