Hello Everyone,
Unfortunately, this is my last blog of the summer, but I have had a great time writing about my life and enjoyed the opportunity to support such a great organization. For this Blog, I want to talk about some of the cool things I have done recently within Whitecourt. Last weekend I went ATVing with my family, and we went to a protected historical site within Whitecourt. A meteor hit just outside of Whitecourt about 1,100 years ago, leaving behind some buried remanence of the actual meteor and a massive out of place crater for us to look at. I have seen the crater many times, and it is well known within Whitecourt, there is a little cleared patch beside the crater for you to have a lunch there and soak in the craziness of the crater.
The picture above is a photo from fall of the crater, you can tell just from the photo how deep it truly is, I read somewhere that it is about 6 meters deep and 36 meters wide. I think I became accustomed to the fact that there was a meteor site until I started looking into it and truly thinking about how crazy it is. How big and how fast did the meteor have to be traveling to leave that large of a mark behind that is still visible about 1,100 year later. There have been people who have found shrapnel of the meteorite when exploring the crater site.
Above is a photo I found of shrapnel that was found within the crater, I cannot imagine the excitement of finding something that large that is part of something with that level of significance. I have a whole new respect and appreciation for the crater and the history site.
Within the same weekend I went on a picnic at one of the lakes near Whitecourt, and of course I got some pictures. If you read my last couple of blogs, you will notice this was the same lake that I was kayaking on a couple of weekends ago. I like visiting this lake and walking around as it is home to a bunch of small wildlife, as well as a beautiful view of the forest as well as the lake. Carson Pegasus is a very well-maintained park, so it is usually somewhat busy, yet still extremely enjoyable.
The Picture on the left is of the picnic set up, it was set up right beside the water in a little hidden cut out that I found, it was awesome enjoying some meat and crackers, fresh fruit and of course chocolate covered strawberries right beside the lake. The Picture on the right is of me on the kayak again, (don’t worry I just took my life jacket off for the picture), it was upper windy while kayaking so it was a workout, but I was able to tor around and see lots of different side of Mcleod Lake.
To end this last blog, I want to take time for a few words to thank those of you that have been reading these blogs and support FPAC, I truly believe that they are a great organization fighting for all the right causes. I am extremely thankful to be given the opportunity to help FPAC further their mission.
Thank you,
Cody Oliver
