As National Forest Week is celebrated across the country, Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) is seizing the opportunity to announce the recipients of its annual Awards of Excellence program. Today, FPAC announced that Kristin Dangelmaier of Domtar Corporation in Kamloops, BC is the recipient of the Woman in Forestry Award of Excellence.

The Women in Forestry Award of Excellence is presented to a female leader who is making contributions to strengthen our dynamic and evolving sector while advancing workplace diversity and inclusion. “Canada’s forest products sector has opportunities for everyone, and we are committed to building a workforce that is inclusive and celebrates success,” said FPAC President and CEO Derek Nighbor. “It’s our pleasure to salute the great work that Kristin is doing to help protect our environment, while at the same time being a tremendous role model to young women in our industry.”

Kristin was born and raised in Bellingham, Washington to Canadian parents. She completed her Bachelor of Applied Science (BApSc) degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of British Columbia in 1989 and began her career working at the pulp mill in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

The ensuing years have seen Kristin dedicate herself to the pulp and paper sector, working for Procter & Gamble, Weyerhaeuser, and Domtar at facilities located in Alberta, Oregon, and BC. Kristin has held key roles in engineering, operations, and maintenance – but environment has been a particular passion over the years. At the Domtar facility in Kamloops, Kristin is the Environment and Technical Manager, overseeing the Environment, Sustainability, Quality, Laboratory Resources, and Process Engineering functions. Throughout her career, Kristin has taken an active role in promoting STEM careers with youth of all ages, and she has paved the way for women aspiring to work in non-traditional roles.

“I am deeply honored to have been selected as this year’s recipient of the Women in Forestry Award of Excellence. Given my passion for the environment and sustainability, I am so proud to have dedicated my career to an industry whose business model is inherently “green” – in all senses of the word,” said Dangelmaier. “As leaders in the areas of climate change, renewable use of natural resources, and environmental responsibility, I see a bright future in forestry and the forest products industry for the next generation of young women wanting to make a difference."
