In early 2023, I was looking for a chemical engineering internship. In March, I got an interview offer for an engineering co-op role at Tolko Athabasca Division LTD, a wood manufacturing company. This unexpected opportunity transformed my perception of wood manufacturing and showed me the importance of Canadian forestry in our lives. Back then, I did not know much about Canadian forestry, but the job application intrigued me. During the interview, I talked to my future manager about my interest in quality control, which aligned with my background in chemical engineering. This sparked my curiosity about wood manufacturing processes. When I accepted the summer internship, I started at Tolko Athabasca LTD, based in Slave Lake. I quickly realized how crucial forestry is for things like building houses. I began by assisting lab technicians, learning about making oriented strand boards (OSB) and laminated strand lumber (LSL) boards.
However, it was not just about making things; it was about making them right. I saw the meticulous testing done in the lab to ensure top-notch quality before products reached customers. This emphasized the company’s commitment to excellence, teaching me that quality matters most in wood manufacturing. As time went on, I became more hands-on. I engaged in experimental trials, wrote reports, and analyzed data. But what truly stood out were the people I met colleagues who are eager to share and learn.
Over these four months, I learned more than technical skills. I understood the importance of leadership, values, professionalism, and integrity. Each day brought new insights, challenges, and accomplishments, all of which added to my personal and professional growth. In conclusion, what stated as search for a chemical engineering internship turned into a journey into the heart of Canadian forestry. My time At Tolko Athabasca Division LTD not only taught me about wood manufacturing but also instilled valuable life lessons. As I move forward, I carry these experiences with me, ready to apply them in my future endeavors.
