A Via Ferrata is an Italian term meaning Iron Path. It is a permanently set cable through a climbing route to ensure safety and ease of use. They originated in the Alps and we are lucky enough to have a couple in central Alberta.
This is Mt. Stelfox, near Lake Abraham, and it has an attainable “blue” rated route! If you don’t have much climbing experience, it is a great way to experience multi-pitch elevation gains without prior multi-pitch experience. If you’re brand new to climbing, its relatively easy to find a local guide who can ensure you use appropriate equipment. I feel really lucky to have these sorts of outdoor experiences available in Alberta.
